CDRD HOSTS LECTURE ON PATENTING PROCESS AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

The Centre for Defence Research and Development (CDRD), established in 2006 under the Ministry of Defence, was founded with the vision of creating a world-class science and technology base to provide the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka with a decisive edge through internationally competitive systems and solutions. As a pioneer in delivering cost-effective and innovative technologies for both military and dual-use applications, CDRD continuously engages in research and development, often collaborating with universities and other organisations.
The Centre for Defence Research and Development (CDRD) primarily focuses on new inventions and innovations, particularly in relation to intellectual property (IP). The institute is committed to strengthening the knowledge and expertise of its staff through continuous professional development. As part of this initiative, CDRD organised a guest lecture on the patenting process and intellectual property at its headquarters on 23rd September 2025.
The session was conducted by Engineer Daham Shyamalee, co-founder and director of Asian-Novelty–Vetlin Solutions Pvt. Ltd., an organisation that provides inventors with prior-art searches, patent drafting, filing, and commercialisation services.
The lecture, attended by Deputy Director Commodore T.D.S. de Silva USP, psc, and other senior officers, brought together participants from various research divisions of the Sri Lanka Army, Navy, and Air Force, both in person and online. The session offered a comprehensive overview of intellectual property, focusing on the fundamentals of patents, the patent application process, and the distinctions between regional and international patenting systems.
