The Center for Defence Research and Development (CDRD) has successfully launched a specially developed mobile application designed to provide essential information to devotees visiting Anuradhapura during the Poson festival. This initiative was undertaken following a request made by the Chief Monk of the Anuradhapura Atamasthanaya, Venerable Dr. Pallegama Hemarathana Thero. The mobile application was developed by the Information Technology and Geographical Information System (IT & GIS) Wing of CDRD and was accessible via https://posonvandana.lk. The app offers comprehensive details including the locations of available car parks, Dansal zones (free food distribution points), drinking water points, public toilet facilities, and suitable tanks and water bodies designated for bathing, which are monitored by lifeguards. Additionally, it provided the locations of information centers and emergency contact numbers vital for public safety.

A recent collaborative empirical research work initiated by CDRD [RC 39 (2023) - Changes to Animal Bone Characteristics before and after Explosions; An empirical study] has made an astonishing discovery on the possibility of using bone histopathology for blast-related death investigations. Publishing the study, the International Journal of Legal Medicine reveals that the results of this study present the first evidence-based findings on the post-blast histological changes in three animal bones when exposed to close-range chemical detonation (High explosives/ C4) and highlights the possible future use of bone histopathology for blast-related human death investigations. Further research is underway to understand the applicability of the findings to human bones.

NRTC DELEGATION FROM PAKISTAN EXPLORES DEFENCE SOLUTIONS WITH CDRD

BASIC WEAPON TRAINING SIMULATOR HANDED OVER TO KDU

However, they have become non-affordable for most developing countries due to their high costs. The Centre for Defence Research and Development (CDRD) stepped into the new year-2024 with a charming ceremony which included the hoisting of National Flag by the Director General of CDRD and the CDRD Flag by the Deputy Director General, a two-minute silence observance in commemoration of gallant fallen war heroes, reading and swearing of the Public Service Affirmation, Director General’s address and traditional tea party giving the prominence to the military tradition and Sri Lankan culture. The event was graced by the Director General Brigadier B I Assalaratchi USP psc ptsc as the Chief Guest while the Deputy Director General, Commodore TDS De Silva USP psc, Chief Controller, Group Captain AS Elegoda USP, all Officers , NCOs, Civil servants and intern students of the Centre for Defence Research and Development cheerfully attended the event. In fact, it was a cherishing moment for everyone as all members of the CDRD dearly shared their blessings and wishes for a successful, prosperous and harmonious new year 2024.

Twenty six Student Officers of Senior Command Course No 8 of Officer Career Development Centre (OCDC), visited CDRD on 10th July 2023, as a part of their course curriculum. Forensic ballistics-related research outcomes of CDRD handed over to the Inspector General of Police and Government Analyst.

A collection of articles related to firearms forensic-related research by the Armament and Ballistics Wing of the CDRD were recently handed over to the Inspector General of Police and Government Analyst. These articles contained the findings of the empirical research works conducted by CDRD from 2018 to 2022 to forensically analyse the ricochet behaviour and scientific evidence of different bullet-target combinations regularly reported in recent shooting-related crime scenes. The scientific knowledge transferred was expected to be referred to during real-world forensic case works related to bullet ricochets in shooting incidents and scene reconstructions. The official handing-over took place at the Government Analyst Department and Police Headquarters. Director General CDRD, Brigadier R Elvitigala USP, and the principal investigator Lt Col (Dr) N A B M S Nishshanka RSP USP psc SLAC of Sri Lanka Army were present for the occasions.

The newly appointed Director General to the Centre for Defence Research and Development (CDRD), Brigadier R Elvitigala USP, assumed office during a ceremony held at the CDRD on 20th March 2023. The Deputy Director General, Chief Controller and the Staff of CDRD were present at this occasion. The new Director received his appointment letter as the 7th Director General of the Centre for Defence Research and Development. After assuming the duties, the new Director General addressed all the Officers and Other Ranks.

CDRD research work presented at AAFS - 2022.

Taking an innovative research outcome of Sri Lanka to the international, a CDRD`s research work was recently presented at the 74th International Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS -2022.) The research work was virtually presented at the prestigious conference on 24th February 2022, by Lt Col Bandula Nishshanka RSP USP psc in the presence of 4000 scientists joining virtually and in-person at the State Convention Centre, Seattle, Washington, USA.

Broadening the on-going collaboration efforts with local universities and research institutes CDRD signed an MOU with the University of Peradiniya on 17 December 2021. The signing of the MOU was held in the University of Peradeniya and a delegation from CDRD headed by the Director General, Major General K R P Rowel (Retd) RWP VSV USP ndu USACGSC attended the event. Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, Professor M.D. Lamawansa signed the MOU on behalf of the University.

CDRD handed over locally developed drone jammers and digital mobile radios for parliament security.

The CDRD handed over indigenously built 20 numbers of Mobile Radio “CREEPER” and two Drone Jammers for the Parliament Security on 25th November 2021. The Secretay General of the Parliament, Mr. Dammika Dissanayaka, Director-General of CDRD Major General Renuka Rowel (Retd) RWP VSV USP ndu USACGSC, Air Vice Marshal MDAP Payoe RWP, RSP, USP, MSc, ndc, psc and some of the senior officials of the parliament and CDRD were present on the occasion.
