Forensic ballistics-related research outcomes of CDRD handed over to the Inspector General of Police and Government Analyst.

A collection of articles related to firearms forensic-related research by the Armament and Ballistics Wing of the CDRD were recently handed over to the Inspector General of Police and Government Analyst. These articles contained the findings of the empirical research works conducted by CDRD from 2018 to 2022 to forensically analyse the ricochet behaviour and scientific evidence of different bullet-target combinations regularly reported in recent shooting-related crime scenes. The scientific knowledge transferred was expected to be referred to during real-world forensic case works related to bullet ricochets in shooting incidents and scene reconstructions. The official handing-over took place at the Government Analyst Department and Police Headquarters. Director General CDRD, Brigadier R Elvitigala USP, and the principal investigator Lt Col (Dr) N A B M S Nishshanka RSP USP psc SLAC of Sri Lanka Army were present for the occasions.
The research publications presented had been published in leading peer-reviewed international journals such as (Forensic Science International, Science and Justice (Elsevier) and Journal of Forensic Sciences (Wiley) due to the high-quality scientific content and the greater practical use of the findings for real-world forensic cases. These articles are also considered the highest bullet ricochet-related scientific publications by a single institute in any currently published peer-reviewed indexed or non-indexed journals. The publications attracted much international recognition to the CDRD as an institute that conducts cutting-edge and high-quality applied research. Some research works were also presented in prestigious international forums such as the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, USA.
